Spain registered the highest proportion of Internet users through mobile, with 93% of people accessing the network over the last three months, ahead of Cyprus and the Netherlands (88% each), Croatia (87%) ), the United Kingdom (86%) and Denmark (85%).

The weakest proportion was recorded by the Czech Republic (55%), Poland (60%), Latvia (62%), Lithuania (63%) and Greece (66%). The report presented on Tuesday also notes that about eight out of ten Internet users in the EU surfed the Internet with their mobile phones in 2016.

  More than 80% of people between 16 and 74 years old in the EU used the internet in 2016 through different devices. The most popular were mobile phones or smartphones, used by more than three quarters of Internet users, followed by laptops (64%), desktop computers (54%) and tablets (44%).

Mobiles were the instrument to access the most popular network in the entire EU with the exception of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia, where laptops predominated. At the Union level, young people aged 16 to 24 mostly preferred mobile phones to access the internet (94%) or laptop (71%), while the use of a tablet was more popular among people aged 25 and over. and 74 years old (47%).

On the other hand, over the last twelve months, more than 70% of Internet users in the Union gave personal data online and many took measures to control access to the Internet. Nearly half (46%) denied that their personal data were used for advertising purposes and 40% limited access to their profile or content on social networks.

In addition, 37% of Internet users read the statements regarding the protection of privacy before giving their personal data, and 31% limited access to their location. In twelve Member States the refusal to authorize the use of personal data for advertising purposes prevailed, with Luxembourg (with 72% of Internet users), Finland (71%), the Netherlands (65%), Denmark (60%) and Estonia (59%) to the head.

Regarding the restriction of access to geographical location, although it was not a tool of preference in any EU country, more than half of Internet users selected it in Luxembourg (63%), Finland (58%) and in Austria and the Netherlands (52% each).
