Amazon e-commerce giant Amazon made its first delivery of packages using a drone, a service it hopes to extend in the future through its Amazon Prime Air project.
Through a video released on Wednesday, the company directed and founded by Jeff Bezos announced that on December 7 he successfully completed his first shipment with a drone in a test that took place in the county of Cambridgeshire (United Kingdom). In that clip you see a client, Richard B., selecting a product on the Amazon website and, shortly after, the image is moved to a company facility, where an unmanned aircraft with the package on board takes off to the address of the buyer.
According to Amazon's information, this first delivery with a drone lasted 13 minutes since the user acquired the item on the Internet until he arrived at his home. Amazon noted that these drones, which fly at a height of less than 120 meters and can carry packages of up to 2.25 kilos, are completely autonomous in their operation with GPS to go to their destination and return to the base safely.
In addition, Amazon assured that they will use the data and the reaction of the customers of this pilot program in the United Kingdom to expand this service in the future. The goal of Prime Air is to deliver packages to buyers in "thirty minutes or less" thanks to the use of drones. Prime Air currently has development centers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria and Israel.
In 2013, Jeff Bezos argued that Amazon would be able, within four or five years, to distribute part of its merchandise using unmanned flying devices.
